The Station has heard from a couple of sources inside the industry that Facebook, which recently overtook MySpace.com in number of subscribers, is planning to move off leased, co-located data centers and build its own fleet of data farms.

Mark Zuckerberg & Co. will be looking to use the latest, greatest and greenest data center components available on the market.

What does this mean? Well, um, let me see … a few zillion dollars waiting to be spent on either leasing or buying land for the server farms, all new servers, all new storage, all new security, all new everything …

Starting from scratch in the Web 2.0 business is an amazingly challenging task. Google’s been there and done that … When Facebook gets going, it’ll only be about 37 data centers behind Google.
