Cache-centric storage startup Gear6 has announced that its Gear6 Web Cache, the company’s new distribution for Memcached, is now available as a virtual appliance download.

Great. So what’s a virtual appliance? Simple: It’s a virtual machine image designed to run on a virtualization platform, such as VMware ESX, Microsoft Hyper-V or Citrix XenSource. Download and install; no new box needed.

Gear6 Web Cache, originally released in April and currently deployed by some very high-traffic Websites, helps Web 2.0-type sites scale and utilize their Memcached infrastructure more effectively.

Gear6 insists that the results of using this are faster site performance, increased visibility into application and infrastructure tiers, and even a 60 percent reduction in typical capital and operational expenses.

We always find percentages in cost savings difficult to quantify, but it’s probably worth a query if you happen to be a budget-responsible person.

Gear6 Web Cache Virtual Appliance is available immediately for operations teams to test out for themselves. To register, go here.
