Iron Mountain’s Digital division on Jan. 11 announced that its Connected backup for PC has been re-engineered to support Microsoft Windows 7 systems. The upgrade, Version 8.4, also includes support for litigation e-discovery.

Connected backup uses industry-standard encryption and administrative controls to protect user data either on site or via Iron Mountain’s online service. The company’s home-developed data reduction tools, SendOnce and DeltaBlock, are capable of reducing storage requirements by a significant amount, IM said.

All data in Connected backup is transmitted and stored in a compressed format to reduce network loads. Connected’s EmailOptimizer option reduces storage requirements for Outlook and Lotus Notes applications by recognizing duplicate e-mail attachments and storing them only once, significantly reducing storage requirements and simplifying recovery.

A subscription version of the service will be available in March 2010.
