Seattle-based Isilon Systems, known for its high-end, high-quality clustered storage systems, will announce on Nov. 19 the industry’s first production-ready storage system to scale to more than a petabyte of capacity in a single file system and single volume.

This will be the first clustered system to use Hitachi’s new 1TB drives — and that is an amazing capacity. “This is not theoretical; our customers are actually able to use all that storage in production on a daily basis,” Isilon exec Jay Wampold told The Station.

That’s about all we can report right now; check eWEEK on Monday for more details.

Isilon sells most of its systems to movie studios, television networks, scientific labs and government agencies, because its clustered design is optimized for large, linear-type files, such as movies, high-definition video, oil and gas modeling, and other huge data sets.

Amazingly, storage systems in general just keep getting bigger, faster and better. There doesn’t seem to be a limit on what the engineers can do.
