MarkLogic, which makes an XML-based database server for unstructured information, has established itself as an alternative to traditional relational database servers and search engines. The Belmont, Calif.-based company was recently noted as one of “16 Hot Companies Running Under the Radar” by eWEEK.

That makes it an avowed marketplace enemy of companies such as Oracle, among others. Ironically, you can see the great glass-encased, blue-green campus of Oracle right across the way from MarkLogic’s modest offices along the Bayshore Freeway bordering San Francisco Bay.

MarkLogic CEO Dave Kellogg told The Station in an interview that its new-generation enterprise-level DB does all the work at a portion of the time and cost of conventional IT — meaning Oracle. “MarkLogic Server is able to deliver content applications that meet a broader range of user requirements by fully leveraging the content’s XML structure,” Kellogg said.

MarkLogic is a company we’ll be watching closely as it picks up momentum. Lots of enterprises feel pain in this area and are looking for alternatives.

Check the Kellblog for updates on the company. Oh, and by the way, here’s quite an interesting YouTube video on this subject.
