So, you thought today was only Halloween here in the States? Well, right you are, but Oct. 31 also been declared Fall Backup Day — by storage media provider Maxell.

Maxell would like to remind everybody to take stock of their current data backup practices and protect their files by performing a data backup by creating copies of critical data files on CDs, DVDs or tapes.

Consumer/SMB disk drive storage companies would offer the same advice. We’re talking about Seagate/Maxtor, Quantum, and EMC/Iomega; solid-state flash memory providers such as SanDisk, Samsung, Verbatim and Toshiba; and online backup providers Mozy, Carbonite, Box.net, Amazon S3 and Iron Mountain/Stratify — among others.

In the high-speed world of home and business, it’s easy to forget about backing up files, so you might want to consider automating this task. Easy to do. All of the providers noted above offer that software, and prices keep coming down.

You will thank your lucky stars one day when a disk drive conks out or a natural disaster hits your office, and you’ve got everything backed up somewhere — whether it’s on your desk in an adjunct drive or whether it’s in the cloud somewhere.

We’ve probably all been there and done that at some point. Wouldn’t wish that headache on anybody. Have a great Halloween and weekend.
