Fresh off announcing the existence of the F5100, a new high-performance solid-state storage array, Sun Microsystems on Oct. 13 introduced yet another addition to its storageware product line, the Storage 6180 Array.

Sun claims that the Storage 6180 is 50 percent faster in I/O performance than its previous generation, and has a more than 70 percent better price/performance than the IBM DS5020.

Because it uses new lower-power disk drives with cooler-running processors — and fewer of them — the Storage 6180 array provides improved performance with lower cost, which includes both capital and operating expenses, a Sun spokesperson said.

It’s said that the new array can scale across the Sun Storage 6000 product line all the way up to the flagship Sun Storage 6780 array.
