Toshiba Storage Products jumped ahead of its competitors on June 4 to unveil the first solid-state drives to use the smaller, thinner 19-nanometer NAND flash process.
The THNSNF series of SSDs is the latest storage media aimed at high-end and thin and light notebooks, all-in-one desktop computers, embedded systems and external storage devices for consumer and industrial PCs.
The new SSDs provide both high performance and energy efficiency for any usage but are particularly effective in data-intensive and/or energy-sensitive applications.
The new drives will begin mass production in August, Toshiba said.
The THNSNF series uses Toggle MLC (multi-level cell) NAND flash, which has significantly faster performance than competing SSDs using synchronous or asynchronous NAND flash. Clocking in at around twice the speed of Toshiba’s HG3 series SSDs, the THNSNF series will be available in four capacities (64GB, 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB) and in three form factors: THNSNFxxxGBSS (9.5mm height), Serial ATA 6G bps; THNSNFxxxGCSS (7.0mm height), SATA 6G bps; THNSNFxxxGMCS (mSATATM), SATA 6G bps.
The key components of the SSD, from firmware to controllers, as well as NAND flash, are all designed by Toshiba. New in the THNSNF series is data protection through use of Quadruple Swing-By Code, the company’s own error-correction code technology.
The THNSNF series employs Advanced Power Management (APM) technology to control power consumption and offers optional Automatic Thermal Control to reduce power consumption in response to drive temperatures.
