Toshiba’s Irvine, Calif.-based storage division on May 22 announced the availability of its new MC Series, the company’s first high-capacity enterprise hard-disk drive for bulk storage systems and servers running cloud-based applications and scale-out workloads.

The MC Series drives come in a 3.5-inch form factor and can hold up to 5TB of storage with 7,200-rpm performance, the company said.

The HDDs are available in 2, 3, 4 and 5TB capacities and support the industry-standard cloud use-case workloads rating of up to 180TBs per year—which is more than three times the industry-standard workload rating of desktop class hard-disk drives.

The MC Series feature 1TB-per-platter areal density. Because they can hold up to 5TB per host connection, the new drives increase capacity per Serial ATA (SATA) port and enable fewer disks to handle the same storage capacity.

The new drives also have 6G bps SATA interface speeds and Advanced Format sector IT, which enables compatibility with legacy applications and operating environments using aligned writes.

Samples are available on a limited basis, the company said. For more information, go here.
