North America Is the Top Location for OpenStack

Currently, 44 percent of reported OpenStack users are in North America, with Asia holding 28 percent and Europe 22 percent.

Deployments Are Real

When OpenStack got started, many of the deployments were either for development or as proof of concept exercises. The new study found that for the first time ever, production deployments have exceeded the 50 percent threshold and now represent 60 percent of deployments.

Vendor Lock-In Fear Is Driving Adoption

OpenStack Project Adoption Varies

There are multiple projects available within OpenStack, but not all of them are adopted at the same rate. The core Nova compute project is being used by 96 percent of respondents, while only 19 percent are running the Sahara data processing project.

Puppet Pulls OpenStack’s Strings

OpenStack administrators have the choice of several tools to deploy OpenStack. The most widely used tool now is Puppet at 53 percent.

KVM Is the Top Hypervisor

While OpenStack supports multiple forms of virtualization, the open-source KVM hypervisor dominates the list, with 95 percent of respondents using the technology.

Ubuntu Linux Is the Most Popular Operating System

For the most part, OpenStack runs on Linux, and the Linux distribution of choice for 51 percent of the survey respondents is Ubuntu.
