VMware on May 16 added to its ever-increasing product set by acquiring Shavlik Technologies, a provider of cloud-based IT management software for small and medium-size businesses.

Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Shavlik, based in New Brighton, Minn., provides on-premises and SAAS (software as a service)-based management software that enables enterprises to manage, monitor and secure their IT systems when moving to virtual and/or cloud computing IT deployments.

Specifically, Shavlik provides centralized IT management functions that include asset management, security, business continuity and data protection capabilities; simplified deployment and automation, enabling SMBs to evolve legacy systems to virtual and cloud models without requiring significant in-house skills or resources; and automated IT management, including patch, compliance and configuration management.

It was VMware’s second acquisition in less than a month. The Palo Alto, Calif.-based company bought Web-based presentation software provider SlideRocket on April 27.

VMware has been on a shopping spree lately. In March, the companypicked up visual development toolmaker Wavemaker.

VMware and Shavlik have partnered for the last two years on VMware GO, a joint SAAS offering that assists SMBs with rapid deployment and management of VMware vSphere.

The acquisition is expected to be completed later this quarter, VMware said.
