Borland Software Corp. on Tuesday previewed upcoming C++ technology that supports software development for mobile devices such as smart phones, communicators and voice-enabled PDAs.

The Scotts Valley, Calif., company previewed the technology at BorCon 2002, its annual user conference in Anaheim, Calif.

The Borland C++ solution will enable developers to rapidly produce C++ applications that run on the Symbian OS, an operating system for data-enabled mobile phones from London-based Symbian Ltd., the company said. In addition, the previewed technology will support the development of C++ applications for Nokia Corp.s Series 60 platform, which runs on the Symbian OS.

Borlands C++ solution adds on to the companys Java-based JBuilder MobileSet offering, giving Borland developers the ability to develop mobile applications in both Java and C++.

Company officials said Borland will deliver an early release of the C++ solution during the second half of this year.

Jessica Figueras, e-infrastructure analyst at Ovum, a London-based market research firm, said that this year nearly 165 million devices capable of running these sorts of applications will ship worldwide.
