Compuware Corp. later this month will announce that its Java development environment will implement the Object Management Groups Model Driven Architecture, or MDA, in its entirety.

Officials at Farmington Hills, Mich., company said Compuwares Java tool, OptimalJ, will implement MDA in its entirety by the middle of this month, a move that will provide flexibility to Compuware customers through vendor- and language-independent interoperability. Newly MDA-based, OptimalJ offers model-to-model and model-to-code transformation, company officials said.

With its MDA support, OptimalJ enables the rapid development of J2EE (Java 2 Enterprise Edition) business applications by generating complete, working applications directly from a visual model, using intelligent patterns to implement best practices for design, infrastructure and coding, the company said. It also features an active synchronization feature that keeps the code and model in sync.

In its Technology Forecast this year released last month, PricewaterhouseCoopers reported that OMG MDA is poised to “revolutionize” the software design and development process by providing a unique way of creating platform-independent new applications as well as helping with the integration of legacy systems.

Several companies have announced support for MDA, including Hewlett-Packard Co., IBM, Sun Microsystems Inc., Rational Software Corp., Iona Inc. and Borland Software Corp. In May, Sun announced that its NetBeans open-source tools platform would implement MDA.
