SAS Institute Inc. will announce Monday that it is joining the Eclipse consortium, an IBM-led initiative to develop an open-source application development tool platform.

SAS becomes the first of the major business intelligence software vendors to join Eclipse and plans to contribute application development capabilities of its software to the effort. Eclipse members would be able to build business intelligence applications using the framework. SASs data warehousing, analytics and business intelligence software would integrate with the rest of the Java-based Eclipse Integrated Development Environment.

Rich Main, director of Java development environments at Cary, N.C.-based SAS, will represent the company on the Eclipse Board of Stewards.

SAS is active in a number of other standards groups, including the Data Mining Group, Global Grid Forum, Java Community Process, Object Management Group and XML/A Council.

All of the steward companies in Eclipse have committed to releasing Eclipse Platform compatible offerings and to supporting the community of users, researchers and developers this will foster.

Code access and use in Eclipse is controlled through the Common Public License1, which allows individuals to create derivative works with worldwide re-distribution rights that are royalty free.

Eclipse was founded in November 2001 with IBM contributing the initital software. Other founding members that remain Eclipse stewards today include Borland Software Corp., Merant Inc., QNX Software Systems Ltd., Red Hat Inc. and SuSE Inc.
