NEW ORLEANS—Bowne Global Solutions is helping Microsoft Corp. move Visual Studio .Net into the global market.

BGS, a Parsippany, N.J., subsidiary of Bowne & Co., localized Microsoft Visual Studio .Net into eight languages: French, Italian, German, Spanish, Japanese, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese and Korean. In what the company said was one of the largest such projects in history, BGS localized almost 1 million words of software user interface and 14 million words of documentation, both online and printed.

Globalization is the process by which a company expands beyond its home markets. Localization is the next step, when a company transforms various elements of a product for use in a specific locale or target market.

BGS made the announcement Wednesday at Microsofts TechED 2002 developer conference here.

In less than 16 months, BGS said it devised and implemented the language and cultural translation of Microsofts development environment to build and deploy XML Web services. BGS CEO Carl Glaeser said it was important to his company to handle Microsofts global localization effort. Most localization projects are divided between companies that specialize in European projects and Asian projects.
