The World Wide Web Consortium has created the position of CEO and named Steven Bratt to the post effective January 20.
Bratt had held the position of chief operating officer at W3C. As CEO, Bratt will continue to oversee worldwide operations and outreach, including overall management of member relations, the W3C Process, the staff, strategic planning, budget, legal matters, external liaisons and major events, according to the organization.
Bratt came to W3C in 2002 and has served as COO and as Acting Chair, W3C officials said.
The W3C is an international consortium that develops Web standards and guidelines. Tim Berners-Lee, the creator of the World Wide Web, remains the director of the standards body.
Prior to joining the W3C, Bratt held leadership and research positions in industry and government, and served on scientific and arms control delegations. In 1997, Bratt was named coordinator of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty International Data Centre in Vienna, Austria. Prior to that, from 1984 to 1997, Bratt worked as a researcher, first at Science Applications International Corp. and then as a program manager at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, to develop advanced concepts for real-time sensor monitoring, intelligent analysis and international data communications.
Bratt holds a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and has a B.S. from the Pennsylvania State University.
