Bruce Claflin, president and CEO of 3Com Corp., is now a member of Advanced Micro Devices Inc.s board of directors.

Claflin, who has headed the networking equipment manufacturer since 2001, was elected at AMDs board meeting on Friday.

William Sanders III, former CEO and current chairman of AMD, said Claflin brings good industry knowledge to the board.

“We will leverage his highly respected expertise of the enterprise computing market to help us develop our strategic thrusts into this segment,” Sanders said in a prepared statement.

For his part, Claflin said he is impressed at how AMD, of Sunnyvale, Calif., has weathered the economic downturn.

“AMDs board of directors has assisted the transformation and guided the company through very challenging market conditions,” he said in a prepared statement. “AMD is poised for success and I look forward to adding to AMDs legacy as a great, innovative company.”

Claflin, who also serves on the board of directors for Time Warner Telecom, joined 3Com as its president and chief operating officer in 1998. He also has experience with Digital Equipment Corp. and IBM.

Claflin joins AMDs board as the company makes its most aggressive push into the enterprise space. The company in April launched its Opteron chip for servers and workstations, which can run 32-bit and 64-bit applications. On Sept. 23, the company will release its 64-bit Athlon 64 chip for desktop and laptops.
