Amazon.com Inc. Monday announced three milestones in its Web services initiative: a new tool kit, an enhanced Web site for developers and the registration of 25,000 developers in its developer program.

The Seattle-based company released its Amazon Web Services Software Development Kit 3.0 as a free downloadable kit to enable developers to build applications on top of the Amazon.com e-commerce platform. With SDK 3.0, Amazon is enabling developers at other e-commerce sites to tap into the companys Web services expertise and tools and build applications that reside on their sites but that sell Amazon.com products. The sale would go through the third-party site.

Amazon officials said several organizations have begun to take advantage of this opportunity to help draw traffic through their sites. In fact, the company said it has syndicated the Amazon.com Shopping Cart so that third-party organizations can place it on their sites.

Jason Kilar, vice president of worldwide software applications at Amazon.com, said the company started its Web services initiative 10 months ago and already its paying off in terms of developer support.

Developers can find the enhanced developer site for Amazon.com Web services and the SDK 3.0 for download at www.amazon.com/webservices.

Colin Bryar, Amazon.coms director of Web services and associates, said in a statement that the SDK 3.0 “is our best offering to third parties to date.”
