BEA Systems Inc. and Altova Inc. have agreed to partner to deliver a combined offering of their Java and XML development tools, respectively.

Under the partnership, San Jose, Calif.-based BEA will bundle its WebLogic Workshop 8.1 Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) development environment with Beverly, Mass.-based Altovas XMLSpy 5, a leading XML development tool.

“We have an agreement with Altova to combine the leading XML development tool with Workshop to help developers build XML and Web services applications,” said Carl Sjogreen, senior product manager for BEA WebLogic Workshop.

Sjogreen said with the combined offering, developers can use XMLSpy to edit XML files and specify XML Schema definitions to use in WebLogic Workshop. He added that using XMLSpy with BEAs XMLBeans technology in Workshop, developers can define the format of their XML data with Altovas tool and then use it in any WebLogic application.

“Were all about making it easy to build applications, including Web services,” Sjogreen said. “Having a strong XML tool makes this a pretty powerful solution,” he added.

Sjogreen said developers can download a free developer license of WebLogic Workshop 8.1 with a free copy of XMLSpy 5 WebLogic Edition, including a 30-day evaluation license for XMLSpy 5 Enterprise Edition from BEA.
