IBM and Camstar Systems Inc. are teaming up to deliver a collaborative manufacturing solution to the electronics industry.

The software, hardware and services offering enables electronics companies to improve manufacturing operations and reduce costs by integrating product information with supply chain, procurement and customer support software, according to officials from IBM and Camstar.

Under the terms of the agreement, which was announced last week, the companies will jointly market a version of Camstars InSite manufacturing software that has been optimized to run on IBMs WebSphere infrastructure platform.

Camstar, of Campbell, Calif., brings to the table software that provides the ability to manage complex manufacturing models that span multiple factories. IBM, of Armonk, N.Y., offers manufacturing solutions for sales and marketing, along with middleware and hardware.

The InSite software monitors and synchronizes manufacturing activities across globally distributed plants and links them in real time back to the enterprise. The IBM component of the offering includes WebSphere Application Server and MQ middleware, DB2 database software, and IBM eServer pSeries and xSeries hardware. IBM Global Services will provide the integration services.

The joint IBM and Camstar software is geared toward helping manufacturers deal with shorter product life cycles and global price competition by providing the technology to respond more quickly to market demands, officials said. Specifically, it enables the coordination and integration of manufacturing actions.
