Against a backdrop of industry-luminary keynote speakers, vendors large and small at Gartner Inc.s Symposium/ITxpo last week used the stage to tout new and enhanced products in security, enterprise applications and wireless.
Gartner itself used the conference to paint a rosy outlook for IT spending in the coming year, as well as break down the hot technology segments of the future.
Computer Associates International Inc. launched Version 8 of eTrust Security Command Center, an umbrella security management system that handles a range of functions from the time a threat is discovered through its elimination. The new release of the graphical security console adds customizable work spaces for specific security tasks, Web-based update services and correlation tools, officials from the Islandia, N.Y., company said.
At the Gartner conference, Belarc Inc. released its BelSecure IT security compliance system. The system provides an IT portal that helps users identify and categorize systems, choose benchmarks, verify security controls, and monitor those controls along with the security configurations of laptops, PCs and servers, said officials from the Maynard, Mass., company.
Research In Motion Ltd. unveiled its Wi-Fi-enabled BlackBerry device, the 7270, which runs on 802.11b networks.

In addition to data transmission on the WLAN (wireless LAN), the 7270 supports VOIP (voice over IP) and the SIP (Session Initiation Protocol)-based call control, which allows it to work with the corporate PBX, said officials at RIM, in Waterloo, Ontario. Designed to work with the latest edition of BlackBerry Enterprise Server, the device will go into customer trials next month. It is expected to be widely available early next year, officials said.
Gartner, for its part, used the stage to predict that IT spending worldwide will rise 5 percent next year. Gartners global head of research, Peter Sondergaard, attributed the positive forecast to a need to respond to increasing competition from India, China and Brazil, as well as to rising energy costs.
