Iona Technologies Inc. and Hewlett Packard Co. on Wednesday are expected to announce the expansion of a strategic alliance to bundle Ionas Web services integration software on HPs Itanium-based systems, the companies said.

The companies said HP will run Ionas Orbix E2A Web Services Integration Platform – XMLBus Edition on the HP-UX based Itanium processor family. And IONA will become one of HPs key partners offering Web services, Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE), and Common Object Request Broker Architecture technologies across HPs operating systems, the companies said.

Bob Potter, Ionas executive vice president of business operations, said, “We are establishing one another as preferred partners on this very specific area of Web services integration between J2EE and .Net”

Rick Fricchione, vice president of enterprise Microsoft services for HP, said HP likes Ionas neutrality on the J2EE versus .Net issue. “As a services business we are convinced theres a reality out there that most companies have both .Net and J2EE systems, and we position ourselves as a partner that can drive that reality.”

Added Potter: “When we see opportunities [for integration deals] we turn to HP first…because its important to us to have a truly neutral party. Theyve taken an extremely neutral position and thats good for us.”

In addition, Iona plans to certify its Orbix E2A Application Server Platform on the upcoming family of HP AlphaServer systems.
