IBM Corp.s Lotus Software division announced Tuesday that it has shipped its previously announced Workplace Messaging product, a low-cost e-mail server designed to bring basic e-mail to deskless workers.

The move comes on the heels of last weeks joint announcement of a similar offering called Workforce Mail by Sendmail Inc. in combination with Hewlett-Packard Co. and Intel Corp.

Lotus is targeting Workplace Messaging to the manufacturing, transportation and retail sectors. Single user pricing starts at $29, though per-user pricing drops to under $3 per user per month based on a three-year license and 10,000 users.

The mail server, built on IBMs WebSphere application server, can integrate with other messaging products, including Lotus flagship Domino server.

IBM-Lotus will release other products under the Workplace brand for instant messaging, document management and portals, according to Lotus general manager Ambuj Goyal in a previous interview with eWEEK.
