Macromedias Captivate 1.0, based on the companys acquisition of eHelps RoboDemo technology, is an overhaul of the popular application simulation and demo-creation software. These major changes have been mostly for the better, as Captivate 1.0 is one of the best tools Ive ever used for creating rich and complex tutorials, simulations and e-learning demos.

Using Captivate 1.0, released this month priced at $499, I quickly created complex, interactive application demonstrations. With the improved capture features, I could easily record my actions while using a program and could even add a voice-over narration.

The excellent interface made it possible for me to easily edit a demonstration to suit my training needs, and I especially liked the timeline and preview features that let me quickly check my progress.

Within Captivate, it was possible to create complex and specific quizzes within my demos. Captivate supports key e-learning standards such as SCORM and AICC.

Demos created in Captivate can be published as Flash applications, as Macromedia Breeze presentations or as cross-platform executables. I appreciated the option to output rich printed handouts of the demos within Microsoft Word.
