To better enable design reuse and collaboration, product lifecycle management software developer MatrixOne announced over the weekend its acquisition of Synchronicity for $18 million in stock and cash.
Synchronicity Software Inc., of Marlborough, Mass., develops software that enables semiconductor manufacturers to reuse intellectual property—in other words, the design content, test features and documentation that form the semiconductor building blocks.
The acquisition is the first step in MatrixOne Inc.s expansion plans in the global electronics industry, officials said.
The acquisition will enable the Westford, Mass.-based company to provide Synchronicitys design reuse and collaboration software to its customer base—functionality it was not able to provide in the past.
Synchronicity also will add 120 customers, including Fujitsu, IBM, Intel Corp., Nortel Networks Corp. and QUALCOMM Inc., to MatrixOnes bottom line.
The increased customer base and functionality will help position MatrixOne as a leader in the semiconductor and electronics industry, officials said.

The newly combined company will focus on providing electronics development software to the automotive, aerospace, consumer-machinery, medical-device and high-tech industries.
The acquisition is expected to be completed in August.
