Bush Launches Adoption Site

About 134,000 children in the United States are on adoption lists. A Web site launched by President Bush last week might cut that number.

At the site (www. AdoptUSKids.org), families can search for children, and social workers can search for families for the children. The site includes photos of children awaiting adoption as well as adoption resources.

AdoptUSKids is powered by SunGard eSourcing, which donated the technology and is hosting it on servers connected via the SunGard Global Network.

It was initiated by the Childrens Bureau of the Department of Health and Human Services and is being operated by the National Adoption Center.

Access From 60,000 Feet

A California company said it has developed a sun-powered, crewless electric plane that can stay in the air for up to six months and provide broadband Internet access and other wireless technologies to communities below.

Helios, developed by SkyTower, with funding from NASA, will fly at 60,000 feet and provide such services as third- generation mobile voice, data and video services to customers on the ground.

The plane, which has solar panels on top of its wings, will also have fuel cells to enable it to store energy so that it will be able to stay aloft even at night, according to the company.

SkyTower is looking at a commercial launch in about three years.

The plane, which the company calls an 11-mile-tall communications tower, could also help areas that have difficulty receiving satellite or terrestrial services.
