The market for XML development tools will grow to nearly $400 million by 2006, according to a recent market research report.

International Data Corp., of Framingham, Mass., Tuesday released its Worldwide XML Development Tools Software Forecast 2002-2006, which predicts that user and developer demand will drive the market to substantial growth. IDC estimates that the market for XML tools will grow by nearly 42 percent, compounded annually, to a high of $395 million by 2006.

“XML has become mainstream, and the strong demand for XML development tools presents an opportunity for vendors,” said Susan Funke, research manager for IDCs Java and XML for eBusiness service, in a statement. “The demand for utilizing existing content and the creation of new content on the Web is driving the need for authoring tools that can address personalization, content delivery channels, and management of vast quantities of content.”

New XML-based authoring tools that simplify XML document creation and appeal to business users will also help fuel the market, the IDC report said.
