Product lifecycle management (PLM) software maker Agile Software Corp. announced Tuesday the appointment of a new president and chief operating officer.

A former PeopleSoft Inc. executive, Jay Fulcher has taken on the top sales, marketing and services execution roles at Agile.

Bryan Stolle, Agiles chairman and CEO, will focus on product strategy and overall corporate strategy, as well as on further extending the companys reach into the hotly contested PLM industry.

Fulcher comes well-equipped for the COO position. He has held senior management roles in several software companies, including SAP AG and Red Pepper Software.

At PeopleSoft, in Pleasanton, Calif., Fulcher held the position of president of the companys Product Division, and later, vice president of its Global Services Division.

Amid falling revenue and decreasing software licenses over the past year, Agile has buffered its management team by adding a new executive vice president of products and technology and a new chief financial officer.

In June, Paul Wahl, president and COO at Siebel Systems Inc., joined Agiles board of directors.

However Agile, of San Jose, Calif., faces some stiff competition.

The PLM industry in general is a crowded one, with industry consolidation from the likes of EDS, which acquired Unigraphics Solutions and Structural Dynamics Research Corp. and last year formed its fifth business unit, PLM Solutions, dedicated to PLM.

At the same time, enterprise resource planning software makers such as SAP–with its burgeoning mySAP Product Lifecycle Management offering–are becoming ensconced in the PLM fold.
