Dirk Meyer, an 11-year veteran with Advanced Micro Devices, on Jan. 23 was named president and chief operating officer of the chip-making company.

The 44-year-old Meyer had spent the past year as president and COO of AMDs microprocessor business. In his new role, Meyer will share management duties with Hector Ruiz, who gave up the president title but will continue on as chairman and CEO.

The announcement comes on the heels of AMDs most recent quarterly earnings announcement, where the company saw a 45 percent jump in revenues at a time when rival Intel missed analysts expectations.

AMD continues to be buoyed by advantages in its processors in areas such as performance and energy efficiency, though Intel has an aggressive road map designed to close that gap.

Meyer came to AMD in 1995 from Digital Equipment and has since moved up the management ladder.

“Dirk has played an essential role in AMDs rise to the position of technology and innovation leader in the microprocessor industry,” Ruiz said in a statement.
