BEA Systems Inc. Tuesday announced an enhanced commitment to the Linux community, through a new deal with Red Hat Inc.

Bob Griswold, vice president and general manager of San Jose, Calif., companys Java Runtime Products group, said Red Hat, of Raleigh, N.C., will distribute BEAs JRockit Java Virtual Machine (JVM) technology on the Red Hat Network, the companys distribution network for products. “They will distribute JRockit as the only third-party software on the Red Hat Network,” Griswold said.

Griswold said BEAs commitment to the Linux community is a nod to “our customers choice.”

“We see Linux as the fastest growing platform among our customer base,” he said.

Griswold said BEAs hardware- and operating system-independent status positions the company as a top choice for the Linux market. BEA currently has alliances with all the key Linux platform providers, including Hewlett-Packard Co., IBM, Intel, Red Hat and Sun Microsystems Inc.

By optimizing BEA WebLogic JRockit, the BEA JVM for Linux, BEA is helping customers cut their platform costs and concentrate their resources on building applications that create competitive advantage for their businesses, Griswold said.

Meanwhile, BEA will support the new Red Hat Advanced Server in its expanded relationship with the Linux supplier, Griswold said.

The agreement enables BEA to certify BEA WebLogic JRockit, as well as BEA WebLogic Server, to run on Red Hat Linux Advanced Server.

“By certifying BEA WebLogic JRockit and BEA WebLogic Server on Red Hat Linux Advanced Server, BEA is further advancing its strategy of providing enterprises with the most flexible and highest performing solutions to build their application infrastructure,” Griswold said. “BEA has already expanded customer choice through BEA JRockits availability for Intel-based servers, and now BEA is meeting the market demand for Red Hat Linux-based solutions.”

“This agreement is designed to help further accelerate the deployment of Red Hat Linux Advanced Server as a viable platform for enterprise servers,” said Mike Evans, vice president of business development at Red Hat, in a statement. “The collaboration between Red Hat and BEA is important to allow us to deliver enterprise-class solutions faster and more economically, helping to enable our enterprise customers to gain even greater performance and cost benefits. Together, we are creating a stable, reliable platform that helps meet customers IT infrastructure needs.”

In addition, Griswold said Red Hat has agreed to promote BEA WebLogic JRockit to its customers, and BEA has agreed to offer technical support to customers who deploy BEA WebLogic JRockit on Red Hat Linux Advanced Server. The agreement also calls for future co-marketing and joint development activities.
