Quantum Corp. announced Wednesday morning that industry veteran Richard Belluzzo is joining the network storage provider as CEO effective Sept. 3, 2002.

Belluzzo, who had spent 20 years in the executive ranks at Hewlett-Packard Co., also held the position of CEO at Silicon Graphics Inc. His most recent job prior to heading to Quantum, was that of president and COO of Microsoft Corp. He will succeed Quantums current CEO, Michael Brown, who will continue on at the Milpitas, Calif., company as chairman.

“Im very excited about joining Quantum and working to take advantage of the many long-term opportunities in data protection and network storage,” said Belluzzo in a statement. “With leading positions in tape drives, tape automation and network attached storage, and the progress it has made in building a storage solutions presence, Quantum has a very strong foundation from which to grow.”

Belluzzo was brought to Microsoft by CEO Steve Ballmer in 1999 as group vice president of the Consumer Group. He was promoted to president and COO in February 2001, and resigned on May 1, 2002.

At the time of the Belluzzo departure news, he said in a prepared statement that “given where Steve and I knew we needed to take the business, I decided it was the right time to pursue my goal of leading my own company. Im proud of what Ive accomplished at Microsoft, and I will miss the great people Ive worked with over the past several years,” he said.

Microsoft had used the occasion of his departure to announce a restructuring of the company into seven distinct groups, including Windows Client, Server & Tools, and Home & Entertainment, to name three.
