Although most newspapers have tried in vain to charge for their online editions, the Albuquerque (N.M.) Journal recently decided to buck the trend. Subscribers to the print edition get free access to the daily paper online. Nonsubscribers must pay $60 per year for the online edition, and everyone pays to get to the papers archives.

Sales of home firewall units are expected to take off, spurred by the increasing use of broadband connections. Cahners In-Stat Group says that the consumer broadband security market will grow from $74 million last year to more than $800 million in 2005.

Ill Drink to That

More than 1,000 liquor licenses have been renewed online in Pennsylvania since the state Liquor Control Board opened its Web-based service. According to the boards press release, the 1,000th licensee said that the hardest part was turning on his PC. “I reviewed the paper application, and decided to file electronically,” says Gerald Senape of Senapes Tavern in Hazelton.
