EMC Cuts Jobs

EMC, one of the largest vendors of data storage systems, last week said that it would lay off about 1,100 employees, or 4 percent of its work force. However, the company said that it still expects revenue growth of at least 20 percent this year, and that it would spend $1 billion in research and development during 2001.

Dot-Gov Sales

The U.S. government sold $3.6 billion of products and services via more than 164 Web sites in 2000, according to a report issued last week by the Pew Internet & American Life Project and Federal Computer Week magazine. The Treasury Departments TreasuryDirect site accounts for most online government sales: It sold $3.3 billion in U.S. savings bonds, T-bills and notes in 2000.

Opera Hits High Note

Symbian, a consortium of mobile phone makers, said it will embed Opera Softwares browser as the default Web browser in Symbians designs for high-end Internet phones. Symbian, whose members include Ericsson, Motorola, Nokia and Psion, is set to battle Microsoft and Palm in the mobile Net device market.
