Verisign Inc. last week announced a security service for Internet service providers and Web hosting companies targeted at small and medium-size businesses.

The service brings SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) features to shared servers—functionality that normally is available only in higher-end, dedicated hosting configurations, said officials of the Mountain View, Calif., company. End users will receive a VeriSign Secure Site Seal logo to display, which provides authentication information from Dun & Bradstreet Inc. when clicked on, officials said.

The service will be marketed as Shared Hosting Security Services to service providers and will be sold by those providers as Secure Site Services to end users. Early adopters of the service include Atlanta-based EarthLink Inc. and Ensim Corp., a Sunnyvale, Calif., Web hosting platform provider.

The product is available now, though officials would not disclose pricing information.
