America Online Inc. announced Monday a new version of its Enterprise AIM Services offering that includes encryption technology from VeriSign Inc.

Encryption within the 5.2 version of AIM is enabled by VeriSign digital certificates obtained through AOL. Instant messages, file transfers and chat sessions can all be encrypted. Encrypted sessions can still be logged and audited by corporations though.

The Enterprise AIM Services update also includes Version 2.0 of the AIM Enterprise Gateway, which fully supports LDAP-compliant corporate directories, so that AIM screen names can be mapped to employee IDs.

This allows AIM permissions to be set by job title or department. In addition, a Java-based SDK will enable developers to build and deploy AIM Enterprise Gateway-managed and AIM-enabled applications. The AIM Enterprise Gateway embeds technology from FaceTime Communications.

Enterprise AIM Services was first launched last November and also includes the AIM Private Domain Service and AIM Federated Authentication Service.
