Aperto Networks Inc. on Tuesday announced a line of WiMax base stations as well as a handful of carriers who intend to try them out.
Unveiled at the Supercomm show in Chicago, the PacketMAX products are based on the IEEE 802.16-2004 standard for the fixed wireless version of WiMax, which provides broadband access from base station to client, but does not allow for roaming among base stations.
The company expects to conduct WiMAX Forum lab certification in July and begin limited production shipments for 3.5 GHz systems in third quarter of 2005, according to officials at the Milpitas, Calif., company.
Initial products will run in the 3.5GHz frequency band, which is not yet licensed for commercial use in the United States.
However, Aperto intends to follow up with products that run in the 2.5 and 5 GHz bands, officials said.
Service providers intending to conduct trials of the equipment include US Wireless and TowerStream in the United States, Iberbanda in Spain, and Enertel in the Netherlands.
