Cingular Wireless this week finally made its New York debut, while AT&T Wireless expanded its next-generation service into Atlanta.

Cingular, of Atlanta, does not own network space in New York but rather is making use of a network-sharing agreement with VoiceStream Wireless, announced last October, in which Cingular also let VoiceStream use network space on the West Coast.

Cingular had offered data services in New York for Palm and BlackBerry devices through its Mobitex network for several years but had not offered voice services in New York until this week. The company plans to open 100 stores in the metropolitan area by the end of the year, including the Cingular Zone in New York.

Meanwhile, AT&T Wireless this week began offering wireless data services to Atlanta customers via the GSM (Global Standard for Mobile Communications) /GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) network.

Service for the AT&T Wireless network is available for the Sony Ericsson T68, Nokia 8390 Motorola Timeport P7382, Siemens S46, and the RIM BlackBerry 5810.
