Cisco Systems announced Sept. 18 it plans to acquire Cognio, a spectrum analysis and management firm for wireless networks.

Cognio, based in Germantown, Md., specializes in isolating interference problems in wireless networks, thus simplifying network management.

According to Cisco officials, the acquisition will provide Cisco with both complementary and differentiating technology, along with intellectual property and Cognios core team. Cisco hopes the deal will expand its market share in unified wireless networking.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The transaction is subject to standard closing conditions and is expected to close in the first quarter of Ciscos 2008 fiscal year. When the deal closes, Cisco, of San Jose, Calif., plans to integrate Cognio into its Wireless Networking Business unit under its Ethernet and Wireless Technology group.

“Wireless spectrum is a strategic asset for our customers, and its management is key to the robust delivery of mobility applications,” Brett Galloway, vice president and general management for Ciscos Wireless Networking Business unit, said in a statement.

Cognios technology allows network managers to proactively manage their networks by minimizing interference. The company sells its technology directly and in partnership with companies like AirMagnet, Flute Networks and WildPacket. Since 2005, the company has acquired more than 1,000 customers.
