New 108m-BPS Firmware boosts D-Link Systems gateway router and PC card, enabling home users and small businesses to stream video and transfer large files more quickly over wireless networks.

I tested the latest firmware upgrade, Build 2.28, on D-Links AirPlus Xtreme DL-624 802.11b/g gateway router, with the DWL-G650 AirPlus Xtreme CardBus Adapter installed on a laptop. (I also had to upgrade the adapters firmware to achieve the higher bandwidth.) Both firmware upgrades can be downloaded for free at www.dlink.com.

In tests, I used standard FTP file transfers to test network performance. The D-Link Wi-Fi gateway and CardBus Adapter combo delivered more than 60M bps of throughput on average, significantly better than 802.11bs top speed of 11M bps and 802.11gs 54M-bps maximum. (Factoring in application dependencies and the TCP/IP stack, most Wi-Fi networks will have average bandwidth of 4M bps to 30M bps.)

The 108M-bps firmware upgrade is available on the DL-624 gateway with the DWL-G650 CardBus and DWL-G520 PCI adapters only. D-Link plans to release firmware upgrades for older gateways as well.
