Exponentia Communications and the National Hockey League announced Dec. 5 that they have signed a multi-year rights deal to bring NHL fans a live mobile game known as PlayAction.

Exponentia is a mobile games provider and its PlayAction game will allow NHL fans to make live predictions through their mobile phones whether they are home or at the game.

With this hockey-based mobile game, players will be able to take on their friends, form their own leagues and compete for team jerseys and other prizes.

“The NHL is a premiere league and we are extraordinarily proud to be announcing this partnership,” Andrew Gregory, managing partner of Exponentia, said in a company release.

If fans want to play, they have to text message the name of the team they follow to the short code 24365 on their phones. The players will then receive trivia or multiple choice questions about the game through text messages as the game goes on.

PlayAction producers follow the game live and come up with questions based on the action. An example of a question could be: “Will the home team regain the lead before the end of the period?”

This is not the first time that Exponentia has been involved with hockey. In 2004, they released a live mobile game with the International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship.

“NHL fans are totally involved with our game,” said Keith Ritter, president of NHL ICE. “We and Exponentia are going to give them a chance to compete and demonstrate that involvement while having some fun in the process.”
