IBM on Wednesday introduced what the company is calling its first mobile workstation.

The ThinkPad A31p, which features Intel Corp.s 1.7GHz mobile Pentium 4 processor and the Mobility FireGL 7800 graphics chip from ATI Technology, is designed for mobile users who need high-speed graphics capabilities and wireless connectivity, said IBM officials in Somers, N.Y.

The A31p includes support for both the Bluetooth and 802.11b wireless protocols. It weighs 7.1 pounds and comes with a 60GB hard drive and up to 1GB of RAM, although 256MB is standard.

It also comes standard with IBMs Embedded Security Subsystem, which encrypts and decrypts keys in hardware rather than main memory.

IBM plans to have the ThinkPad A31p certified by at least 25 software application vendors by the time the notebook becomes available on March 19.

Pricing for the notebook will range from $3,349 to $3,699, depending on configuration.
