The California state Senate last week passed a bill to set privacy standards for the use of RFID in stores and libraries. The bill from Senator Debra Bowen (D-Redondo Beach) permits stores and libraries to use bar codes to collect the same information they collect now, while at the same time banning the use of the technology to track people as they shop or after they leave the store.
The bill moves to the state Assembly, where it will be heard in June.
