Following the defection of Edward Breen last week, wireless hardware maker Motorola Inc. named Mike Zafirovski its new chief operating officer.
Zafirovski had been executive vice president and president of Motorolas personal communications sector before taking the COO post.
“Under Mikes leadership, over the past two years, Motorolas handset business has gained market share, returned to profitability and introduced an exciting portfolio of products,” said Christopher Galvin, CEO of Motorola in Schaumburg, Ill., in a statement. “With his track record of solid results, both at Motorola and at General Electric, Inc., I am confident that he will continue the momentum of Motorolas turnaround, and I look forward to having him join the Office of the Chairman.”
Zafirovski also will continue as President of Motorolas Personal Communications Sector until a successor is named.
Breen left Motorola to take the helm as CEO of Bermuda-based conglomerate Tyco International Ltd. He started immediately at Tyco on Monday, replacing Dennis Kozlowski, who resigned in June, shortly before being indicted on tax evasion charges.
