Nokia announced Monday that it will be working with Apple to create a new browser for its Series 60 smart phones. The open-source browser will use the same components used in the Safari Web browser.
“Apple is pleased to assist Nokia in creating their new Series 60 browser based on the same KHTML open source technology that powers Apples Safari,” Apple SVP, Worldwide Product Marketing Philip Schiller said in a statement.
“The Safari Web Kits blazing performance, efficient code base and support for open standards make it an ideal open-source technology for projects like Nokias new Series 60 browser.”
The mobile browser will use WebCore and JavaScriptCore currently used in Safari. For Apple, this means more people will be using the Konqueror/Safari platform.
In the statement, Nokia says it plays to “actively participate” in the open-source community to “further develop and enhance” these components by lending the companys mobile expertise.
