Handheld computer maker palmOne Inc. on Wednesday announced that it is cutting its workforce by 12 percent, or about 100 employees.

The move follows the companys spin-off of its software division and acquisition of fellow device maker Handspring Inc. last October. Handsprings strength is its Treo line of smartphones, which is becoming more of a focus for palmOne, according to company officials in Milpitas, Calif.

“We intend to maintain our lead in the handheld-computer category with new, innovative solutions while we shift more investment toward the higher-growth smartphone category,” said Todd Bradley, palmOne president and chief executive officer, in a statement on Wednesday.

After the layoffs, palmOne will have approximately 740 employees.

PalmOne is the name of the former Palm Inc.s hardware operation. In the fall, the company spun-off of its PalmSource operating system division.
