Recently, I took for a spin the Pocket GPS Portable Navigator, a GPS-enabling Pocket PC add-on from Pharos Science and Applications. What stood out immediately for me about the Portable Navigator was its CompactFlash connector—a couple of years ago, I tested a Pharos GPS product that hooked up to specific Casio handhelds across the synchronization port.
In fact, a great many makers of handheld device add-ons deliver products locked to a single type of device. In a space with as many design shifts as the PDA business, this seems like a recipe for user frustration and unsold units.
The $250 Portable Navigator comes with regional maps that I could load onto my test Toshiba e740 as needed. With a combo of turn-by-turn directions and voice prompts, the GPS receiver and mapping software made it easy for me to figure out how to reach destinations.
