Research In Motion Ltd. has filed a patent infringement suit against upstart competitor Good Technology Inc.

The complaint, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware, alleges that Good Technologys products and services infringe on four RIM patents; these range from patents for a method to control gateway functions in a wireless network to a patent for a thumb-optimized mobile device.

Good, of Sunnyvale, Calif., offers similar wares as RIM – back-end server software and a companion device that enables wireless access to corporate data. Good last month signed a deal with Cingular Wireless wherein the carrier will use the companys technology for wireless data services, with eventual plans to resell Goods G100 wireless handheld device.

To date, GoodLink supports only Exchange, while RIM BlackBerry Enterprise Server supports Exchange and Lotus Development Corp.s Notes platform.

What Good provides out of the box that RIM doesnt, however, is the ability to view e-mail attachments and the ability to browse and read e-mail within subfolders. GoodLink also offers two-way push synchronization, which automatically deletes messages on the server.
