Sprint and Boingo Wireless announced a multi-year agreement that enables Sprint cellular users free access to Boingo Wi-Fi networks in 35 major U.S. airports.
The deal, announced April 30, will include deployment of up to 40 million Sprint handsets for Wi-Fi offload at Boingo’s managed and operated networks.
Sprint travelers with Passpoint-enabled devices will be able to use Boingo’s Passpoint Secure Wi-Fi networks, with the devices making the switch automatically.
Sprint devices within proximity of a Boingo hotspot will automatically connect to the Wi-Fi network, providing service at the fastest speeds available — be it cellular from Sprint or Wi-Fi from Boingo.
The auto-authenticating Wi-Fi connections are available at no additional charge to all Sprint customers with capable devices; usage while connected to Wi-Fi does not count toward a customer’s monthly service plan. Sprint and Boingo have completed successful market trials with millions of Sprint handsets that demonstrated the benefits of automatic authentication onto Boingo’s Wi-Fi networks, Boingo said.
