eWEEK Labs evaluation of two small-office wireless switches showed that both perform well but that each is suited to a different kind of network.

We tested Symbol Technologies Inc.s WS 2000 Wireless Switch and Trapeze Networks Inc.s MXR-2 Mobility Exchange. Both products offer the highest levels of wireless security, supporting AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) and pass-through of 802.1x authentication to back-end authentication servers.

However, we found differences in the products abilities to help small networks achieve this protection without requiring existing network services, and we also noted differences in wireless IDS (intrusion detection system) functions, ongoing management and deployment capabilities.

IT managers at small companies or branch offices who are looking to upgrade wireless equipment to support the latest security measures will find that these products measure up, but management, mobility and power concerns should be weighed as well.
