Bitboys Oy, a Finnish developer of graphics cores, announced its plans to develop the Acceleon, designed for the handheld and PDA market.

Bitboys said it will showcase the three members of the Acceleon family at the SIGGRPAH graphics exhibition this week in Los Angeles.

Although Bitboys was founded in 1991, the company has never been able to manufacture a graphics core for volume production. Bitboys codesigned the TR25201 with Tritech. However, Cirrus Logic filed and won a lawsuit against Tritech in 1999, stripping Tritech of the financial resources needed to manufacture the part. Bitboys later designed the “Axe” and “Hammer” cores, but financial troubles at Bitboys and at its foundry, Infineon, forced it to shutter both projects.

Bitboys will produce three cores: the G10, for the volume market; the G20, designed for wireless handheld gaming; and the G30, the top-of-the-line embedded processor. The G30 will support an “early version” of OpenGL ES 1.0, the embedded version of OpenGL, Bitboys said.

The Acceleon core architecturre supports an advanced hardware antialiasing system that can be enabled with no penalty, smoothign the appearacne of the generated graphics, the company said.

“Acceleon Visual Platform provides the most complete rendering solution for mobile devices today,” said Petri Nordlund, chief technical officer of Bitboys Oy, in a statement.
